As suggested in some of the highlights comments here, it matters which way you circumnavigate the caldera - going clockwise should be a lot easier than the other way around!
The path is basically not extremely difficult to walk, but you should have sturdy shoes with usable soles (a lot of lava grit). Sticks are not necessary, but useful!

Directions
between the stone walls the path leads down into the caldera. Below we come across a crumbling homestead on a eucalyptus tree. A dilapidated tree press bears witness to better times. After our round through the lush vegetation we climb up again. At the top we go left to the golf course, along the edge of which we get to the upper circuit.
