Rastatt Castle is the first of the Baroque residences on the Upper Rhine. The imposing layout clearly demonstrates in its overall architecture a geometric unity of city and garden with the castle in the center.

Diagonally through the Hardtwald was a 4m wide road from Bietigheim coming to Ettlingen where it runs parallel to the "Hirschlochweg" at the Waldgewann "Ausbusch" on "Bruchhausener Weg". It was not paved but made of different layers of sand and gravel. The profile of the Roman road is still clearly visible today as a bump.
