Great cycle route out of the city, would be better if it continued all the way to the Itchen but hey can't complain.

You have to go up towards Shirley to then get back down to go towards town quay via the station, unless you stick to the busy road.

Coming from Totton I don't drop down Nelson Hill and past the station which uses the footbridge to continue. I cross Central Station Bridge to the Police Station and then rejoin the cycle paths. Do the same in reverse coming from Town Quay, which has the benefit of cutting out carrying the bike over the railway line at the station and the very steep Nelson Hill back up to Millbrook Rd East.
