Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī - Rumi for short - mostly called Maulawī in Persian (born September 30, 1207 in Balch, today in Afghanistan, died December 17, 1273 in Konya), was a Persian Sufi mystic, scholar and one of the most important Persian-speaking poets of the Middle Ages. From his followers, especially the dervishes, he was nicknamed Maulana (Turkish spelling: Mevlânâ) for "our Lord / Master". The Mevlevi Dervish Order is named after him.
