This native birch species, the downy birch, which is found almost exclusively on moist, acidic soil, acquires a white bark as it ages. In contrast to the silver birch, the downy birch has an upright growth habit with shoots that stretch upwards. It is the distinctive tree of the bog areas.

Vandring
The Hill (Helle), is the longest watercourse in the High Fens, rises near Baraque Michel and flows into the Weser in the lower town of Eupen. Previously, in Roman times, it functioned as a border river. Later, in the period from 1815 to 1919, it represented the border between Prussia and the Netherlands or Germany and Belgium.
