In 1672, Count Salentin Ernst von Manderscheid-Blankenheim (1630–1705) ordered the expansion and restoration of the town's fortifications. The construction of the fortifications involved the inclusion of the town's extended valley location, beyond which it would not expand significantly until the middle of the 20th century. Part of the expansion was the so-called "external" gate, i.e. the most remote one, which also represented the western end. According to Ernst Wackenroder, there are floor plans and elevations of this gate from 1670, but these were never built. In 1702, the gate was referred to as St. George's Gate.
