The Alte Oper was badly damaged in World War II. The City Council wanted to leave the remains (in some cases there were also plans to blow up the remains) In the fifties, a citizens' initiative was founded to rebuild the Old Opera House. The reopening took place in the presence of the former Federal President Carstensen on 28.08.1981.
A visit, however, is only offered as a guided tour from 12 people with prior registration (mailto: soeren.appuhn@t-online.de).

The construction costs of the Frankfurt Opera were then planned at 2 million marks. By 1880, it had cost a whopping 20 million marks.
In 1944 it was largely destroyed in a bombing raid and in 1951 they built a new opera house. In 1965 they wanted to demolish the ruin completely, but thanks to civil protest and the largest fundraiser in Germany until then, it was rebuilt faithfully to 1981.
