Baroque church architecture, which is rather atypical for the Dresden region, dates from around 1400 (it was first mentioned in 1406). Around 1200 there is said to have been a wooden church at this location.
The "wedding church" near Pillnitz, which is popular today, stood for about two meters in the water for several days in 2002, after the flood of the century, and was consecrated in 2003 with help and donations.

The church was baptized around 1500 on the name "Maria am Wasser". At the time, the building was a simple rectangle and was lower and shorter than today's church.
The church had no galleries and only a few windows. It was mainly used as a fishermen's and boatmen's church and was a place of pilgrimage until the Reformation.
