        The castle complex was first mentioned as Wazzerburch in 1085-1088. It was originally the seat of the counts of Wasserburg and from 1247 was owned by the Wittelsbach family, who used the castle as a short-term residence, especially in times of crisis. The castle complex was expanded between 1526 and 1537 by Duke Wilhelm IV. Today a retirement home is housed in the Ducal Palace and other buildings in the complex.
