The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial to the German division, located in the center of the capital. At the historic site on Bernauer Straße, it stretches 1.4 km across the former border strip. Bernauer Strasse is an example of the effects of the construction of the Berlin Wall as the focus of German-German post-war history.
Distance to the bike path: 2.6 km
Opening hours of the visitor center Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 6pm.

The Berlin Wall Memorial begins in the immediate vicinity of the Nordbahnhof S-Bahn station. It is the central place to remember the division of Germany. The last section of the Berlin Wall, including the border wall, the hinterland wall, the control strip, the column path, etc., is more than one kilometer long. There is a visitor center opposite the site, which provides a comprehensive insight into the history of the division of Germany.

When the construction of the wall began on August 13, 1961, particularly dramatic incidents took place on Bernauer Strasse. Here the border did not run in the middle of the street, but directly along the facade of the houses. As a result, the houses themselves were in the eastern part of the city, the sidewalk in front of them in the western part. Many people fled by climbing through the windows. Gradually the windows were bricked up, so that the refugees had to move to higher floors, they abseiled or jumped. Downstairs the West Berlin fire brigade was often on hand with jump covers and saved the lives of many. When only windows on the top floors were finally open, there were deaths due to jumps, and the first wall deaths were to be complained about here.

One inevitably "frequents" the memorial, if one drives along the wall path. The latter is about 160 km long. I recommend scheduling an overnight stay so that you are not only physically active, but also have time to reflect and think.
