        The lake was used as a fish pond until the Mannheim – Stuttgart high-speed line was built. The Freudenstein Tunnel runs northeast of the lake through the mountain. The lake was drained on June 22nd, 2009, and about 10 days later it was empty, much faster than expected. Between 50,000 and 60,000 fish were recovered. The digested sludge then dried out and mineralized. Experts hope that the lowering will result in a long-term improvement in the ecological situation. It is now known as a "heavenly pond", i.e. it gets its water mainly from precipitation. Regular fishing and draining as it used to be no longer takes place. Since then there has not been as much water in the lake as before.

          It really is an absolutely beautiful place. When you drive down from the Horn it is a surprise. The story of the Berhardsweiher is really exciting, which is why I will have a spade with me next time :-) :-):
          A description of the "Oberamt Maulbronn / Chapter B 2":
          On Derdinger Markung in the valley against Sternenfels, where the former so-called Bernhardsweiher is located, the lost place Bernhardsweiler, which occurs several times between 1194 and 1295 (Mone, Zeitschr. 1, 109, 247).
          Exciting great area and definitely worth a tour and without spades of course.
