An interesting anecdote is that the cemetery originally contained 517 graves, but after the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line in the spring of 1917, the bodies of soldiers from various temporary cemeteries were transferred to Ancre British Cemetery. Special memorials in the cemetery commemorate 16 soldiers whose graves were destroyed by shell fire and 43 known casualties who are believed to lie beneath unknown graves.

Ancre British Cemetery commemorates British and Commonwealth soldiers who fought in the Battle of the Somme during the First World War. The cemetery mainly contains the graves of soldiers who died on 1 July 1916 during the first attack on the village of Beaumont-Hamel, on 3 September 1916 during the second attack, and on 13 November 1916 during the capture of the village and the nearby towns of Beaucourt-sur-Ancre and St Pierre-Divion.

L'Ancre British Cemetery is a military cemetery containing the remains of 2,541 combatants: 2,495 British, 42 Newfoundlanders, 2 New Zealanders, 1 South African, and 1 German (of whom more than 1,300 could not be identified).
The majority of the men buried in this cemetery were killed on July 1st (the first day of the Battle of the Somme), September 3rd (the general Franco-British attack along the entire Somme front), and November 13th, 1916 (the Battle of the Ancre, capture of Saint-Pierre-Divion and Beaumont-Hamel - Beaucourt-sur-Ancre was taken the following day). In the spring of 1917, after the terrible fighting of the Battle of the Somme which had taken place from 1 July to 18 November 1916, the battlefield was "cleared" and a number of cemeteries were built. Among these, Ancre British Cemetery No. 1 (which was also known as Cemetery No. 26 of the 5th Corps) which contained 517 graves (mainly from the 63rd "Royal Naval" and 36th "Ulster" Divisions) and which would become Ancre British Cemetery after the armistice, when 1965 isolated graves or those located in other cemeteries, all from the Beaumont-Hamel battlefield, were grouped here.
