        History of the church

        The Hippolit parish in Amelinghausen probably has a history going back more than 1,000 years. The exact circumstances surrounding the founding of the municipality are unclear.

          The history of the Hippolit Church in Amelinghausen dates back to the 10th century, when it was built as a wooden church. Amelung, the brother of the Saxon duke, is considered the founder of the church and monastery. He admired the early Christian writer Hippolit, after whom the church was named.
          In 1170, the church was replaced by a fieldstone building and rebuilt in the neoclassical style from 1818 to 1820 after a major fire.
          The neo-Gothic church tower was not built until 1895 for financial reasons.
          Parishioners donated the stained glass windows on the north side.
