The Markberg Cross, visible from the B 279, has been located north of Schönau since 1965 on the 425 meter high Markberg. The first, 19 meter high Markberg cross was made of spruce wood and was replaced in 1973 by a cross of the same height made of larch wood because of its poor condition. In 1998 this was replaced by the 23 meter high Markberg Cross, which still exists today and has a protective copper cladding on the crossbar. The Markberg Cross was financed by the Kolping family, which also holds the Markberg Festival, one of the most popular regular events in Schönau an der Brend, at the foot of the Markberg Cross on the second Sunday in September.
