Not even twenty years after the death of the Saint of Assisi, a church dedicated to him was begun here (1244), one of the first in the world linked to the Franciscan cult. It was officiated by the Friars Minor, hence the name of the street to the left of the building. Remodeled numerous times, it is influenced by the interventions of Gusmano Soli in the early nineteenth century.
The façade is gabled, with a large central rose window and buttresses.
With pleasant and rich nineteenth-century decorations, the naves of the church, characterized by neo-Gothic pointed arches, preserve an extraordinary and moving Deposition from the Cross from 1531 created by the famous Modenese sculptor Antonio Begarelli (left apse): it is a group of thirteen life-size terracotta statues near the three crosses of Golgotha. In the choir near the altar of the central nave, a painting by the great nineteenth-century Modenese painter Adeodato Malatesta depicts Saint Francis receiving the stigmata. Along the right nave, the Mainoni altar dates back to 1840 and was built to end the cholera epidemic that decimated the city's population in those years. On the counter-façade, the organ dates back to the end of the eighteenth century.
Outside, the building next to the church is the metropolitan seminary, designed according to the canons of nineteenth-century Modenese architecture. Inside, a large tree-lined cloister with a portico with twin columns dating back to the seventeenth century and, in the center, a statue of the Immaculate Conception. The main marble staircase is also noteworthy. In the small square to the left of the church, the fountain with the statue of San Francesco is by Giuseppe Graziosi. Also noteworthy is the beautiful octagonal bell tower of the church, dating back to the sixteenth century.
