The Kruisberg prison is situated in a green area on the outskirts of Doetinchem. Originally, De Kruisberg was a farm with an attached gentleman’s room. Later, it was expanded with more land, turning it into a manor house with an estate. The manor house remains the centerpiece and is a very beautiful part of the grounds. It then served as a military hospital, and in 1866, De Kruisberg was converted into a boys’ prison. The inmates were boys aged 10 to 16, sometimes even younger, who were placed there for often minor offenses such as begging, theft, fraud, and vagrancy. The boys worked the land, and in the outbuildings, various trades were practiced, such as tailoring, shoemaking, blacksmithing, clog- and basket-making, and mat weaving. Ultimately, the Kruisberg complex functioned as a penitentiary until April 2014. The entire site, including buildings, covers an area of no less than 168,951 m².
