    I was very enthusiastic about this cemetery, if you can say that of a cemetery. Above all, the location, because it lies on the "mountain" with a wide view of the flat, wide Vierlande.

      The older part of the "new" cemetery was created in 1907 as a park-like burial site (forest cemetery) and was designed by Wilhelm Cordes, the architect and then director of the Ohlsdorf cemetery.
      The extensive complex still looks more like a park than a cemetery today. Straight paths alternate with curved paths, the view is limited by the green hedges of the graves, changes to magnificent flower beds and gets caught up in the high and sometimes sprawling treetops of this typical forest cemetery. All main paths in the southern part, now the old part of the new Bergedorf cemetery, are connected to each other via the Rhododendron Avenue.
      As the capacity of the cemetery was no longer sufficient, after 1948 it was expanded beyond the Hamburg city limits to Wentorf and Börnsen.
      The cemetery grounds include civilian graves, the German war cemetery Hamburg-Bergedorf, a memorial for the fallen of both world wars and the Soviet war cemetery Hamburg-Bergedorf.
