The Spendgasse got its name only in 1911, when the "Spendhaus", the poorhouse of the city, burned down. In addition to the town hall, there are also the "Hochwacht", an important part of the
Engener city fortification.
With the restored ensemble Spendgasse 1-3 the city of Engen won the state competition "Living in the city" in 1979.

The narrow Spendgasse got its name from the Spendhaus that burned down in 1911, the poor house of Engen.
The building known today as the »town hall« used to be the town clerk's office. The half-timbered building, which is atypical for Engen, was built around 1679. Two houses further is the "Hochwacht", an important part of the city fortifications. The town of Engen won the state competition in 1979 with the restored building ensemble at Spendgasse 1
