The builder of Sterneck Castle, Vollmar von Brandeck (between 1230 and 1250), as bailiff of Dornhan, got into a dispute with Alpirsbach Monastery over jurisdiction. He took revenge by robbing and burning treasures in the monastery area. He probably overreached himself with the large new castle complex; because after his death the widow and children had to sell Breitenwies near Aischfeld and Oberehlenbogen in 1276. Alpirsbach Abbey was the only potential buyer. And this initially asserted the damages of the testator. Almost half the purchase price was charged for the damage caused by the testator Volmar.
In the Middle Ages, the Sterneck lordship consisted of four villages (Fürnsal, Wälde, Breitenau and Busenweiler), the Unterbrändi parish estate with the interesting landmarks that are still preserved today, farms in Geroldsweiler and Dottenweiler and the aristocratic Trolley Mountain. Originally, this also included the Breitenwies, the upper Ehlenbogental, the Trolleyberg, the Grabenhof, the Stuhlhof with a former courthouse and the Vogelsberg, where according to Sattler a castle once stood. The Brandeckers had other possessions in the surrounding towns, including Dornhan.
The upper surviving Renaissance frieze on the keep dates from the time of the last Brandecker, also a Vollmar († 1549).
