Camperdown is a town in the Western District of Victoria, that is surrounded by a unique volcanic landscape. The town lies on the edge of a large crater, called the Leura Nested Maar, that was formed by explosive eruptions about 20,000 years ago. The crater is filled with several lakes, such as Lake Bullen Merri and Lake Gnotuk, that have different water levels and salinities due to their varying depths and connections to groundwater. The lakes are popular for fishing, boating and camping.
