The Grand Duchess Elisabeth, affectionately known as "Lissi", is a traditional three-masted gaff schooner.

The Grand Duchess Elisabeth was built in Alblasserdam, Netherlands, in Jan Smit's shipyard and launched in August 1909 under the name "San Antonio" as a cargo sailing schooner with an auxiliary diesel engine.

After an eventful history, the schooner - most recently sailing in the Mediterranean and Caribbean as the cruise ship "Ariadne" - came from Piraeus to Elsfleth in March 1982 and became the "Grand Duchess Elisabeth" there.

From the launch in 1909 to 1914

The history of the Grand Duchess Elisabeth includes the three-masted schooner "San Antonio" launched in 1907 by shipowner Andreas Hammerstein. In 1908, this "San Antonio" collided with the light cruiser "Emden" of the German Imperial Navy. The San Antonio sank as a result of this collision. The crew was rescued, only the cook remains missing.
The maritime court hearing in Kiel revealed that the light cruiser "Emden" caused the collision. The Imperial Navy must pay the shipowner for a new build.
-On April 12, 1909, the shipowner Andreas Hammerstein commissioned the Jan Smit shipyard in Alblasserdam to build a new three-masted schooner.
-The launch under the name "San Antonio" took place on August 19, 1909. The cargo sailing ship with diesel auxiliary engine is given folding masts so that it can also navigate large rivers; later called Grand Duchess Elisabeth.

On October 14, 1981, the Elsfleth shipowner Horst Werner Janssen discovered the Ariadne in Piraeus. He chartered the ship and had it transported to Elsfleth by Captain Uwe Oden and a crew of nautical students from the Oldenburg technical college under difficult conditions. On January 12, 1981, the Grand Duchess Elisabeth Training Ship Association was founded under the patronage of Duke Anton Günther of Oldenburg, whose family had traditional ties to seafaring.
