Yaxhá is far less well known than the impressive Tikal. The pyramids and temples are much smaller, but there is much less going on. I was mostly able to photograph the buildings undisturbed.
Nevertheless, Yaxhá is absolutely worth seeing. The excavations only began in 1989 and were financed for 16 years by the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). Nevertheless, only a small part of the buildings have been uncovered. Most of the pyramids are only recognizable as steep, tree-covered hills under the dense vegetation and are still waiting to be uncovered. Around 35,000 people are said to have lived in Yaxhá in the 8th and 9th centuries.
