In the southernmost point of the canton of Grisons, amidst unspoiled nature, lies the Poschiavo valley. Alpe San Romerio is located on a natural terrace 1,800 meters above sea level and 800 meters above Lake Poschiavo. The mountain refuge is surrounded by meadows and woods and offers a unique view over the Bernina Pass to Valtellina. Here there is also a simple church dating back to the 11th century, which later became a monastery and hospice inhabited by monks and nuns.
Through a small window of the church, a ray of sunlight illuminates the interior of the church exactly on October 1st, the day of San Romerio. In 1998, by chance, frescoes dating back to the 11th century were discovered on the wall opposite the window, as someone noticed them illuminated by the sun on that day.
This church must be earned. The trail is easy, but the slope requires effort. The refuge has been in the same family since 1829 and their specialties are delicious.
