Bokel Heath - between Schweimke and Bokel

The Bokeler Heide nature reserve is located in the municipality of Sprakensehl, north of Hankensbüttel and south-east of the village of Bokel in the natural area of Südheide and is around 18 hectares in size. Due to the nutrient-poor sandy soils and the historical forms of land use, common heather has developed as the dominant biotope type, partly with juniper stands and dried bushes. Older birch and pine trees are scattered.

The Bokeler Heide represents a habitat that is rare in Northern Germany for the flora and fauna that depend on the local conditions. In addition, the nature reserve, as a relic of a form of land use that was formerly widespread in Lower Saxony, is also important for science as well as for natural history and local history.
