The maintained trail ends here, with satisfying views of Herbert Glacier in the near distance. But some trail users choose to continue off-trail to get as close to the glacier as possible. This often means walking on the gravel and sand "beach" of the glacier's outflow.

Use caution, because parts of the "trail" past this point may be flooded. Glacier-fed water is always cold, can run very fast at times, and is filled with so much silt that it's impossible to tell how deep a given channel is. What looks like a shallow rivulet might actually be deep enough to swallow you up.
