The first documented mention was in 1170, when the Ebrach Monastery and the Würzburg Bishopric exchanged goods "also in Buntdorf". The Bishopric of Würzburg and the Truchsess von Wetzhausen family, documented since 1343, shared dominion on the Bundorf manor. The rights of the bishopric, secularized in favor of Bavaria, fell in 1805, those of the manor in 1806 with the mediatization to the Grand Duchy of Würzburg, which came to Bavaria in 1814. In the course of administrative reforms in Bavaria, the municipality of Bundorf came into being with the municipal edict of 1818.
