You don't even need to look too closely at a sculpture, because it clearly marks the entrance to the campus area on Münsterstrasse: The large sculpture “Hand on the Drawing Pen” was actually created on June 13, 1986 on Georg-Glock-Strasse erected at the former entrance area of the building wing of the design departments, whose landmark it remained until it moved to the Derendorf campus in winter 2019 and today points to the entire campus. The aluminum cast was designed by Prof. Klaus Kammerichs as a so-called “photo sculpture” almost five meters high. With these, the artist aimed to translate light into spatiality - he covered the original photographs with a network of lines, each of which marks equal levels of brightness between the blackest darkness and the brightest light. The sculptures (the best known is probably his sculpture “Beethon” in Bonn) are three-dimensional extensions of this network of lines, layers of many individual relief levels that correspond to the tonal values, with the back relief levels being the darkest and the front ones being the lightest.
