    The church originated from the private chapel of a Carolingian royal court, in which several synods were held under the Carolingians and Ottonians. It was also important in the missionization of the Main Slavs.
    The diocese of Würzburg received the church in 976 through a donation from Otto I, and the diocese of Bamberg received it through exchange in 1017. Around 1200, the old royal church was replaced by a late Romanesque church with a cruciform floor plan, of which part of the transept and the crypt below are still preserved. The Bamberg bishop Leopold von Bebenburg converted it into a monastery in 1354. In the 14th century, the church was expanded into a high Gothic basilica, the clerestory of which has been hidden under a gable roof since 1540. The main nave of the nave has a plastered flat beam ceiling. The remaining parts of the church are vaulted. The tower was first mentioned in 1406, and has had its current form since 1670.
    With the Imperial Deputation Act of 1803, the Forchheim monastery came to the Electorate of Bavaria, which had already occupied it militarily the previous year. With the secularization of the monastery, the church became a parish church in 1803.

                      Just drive to Forchheim, stroll through the old town and keep your eyes open - you'll be amazed at how many beautiful things you see.
                      Then go to Globus (the largest shopping center in Forchheim) and the hot counter - the prices and portions are unbeatable. Meatloaf rolls for one euro, but then you'll have 4cm thick meatloaf on the roll :-)
                      But it's usually only open until 2 p.m.
