Every imaginary path through the history of Gran Canaria should begin in Santa Ana Square, which stretches out like a beating heart in the Vegueta district. It used to be known as Freedom and Constitution Square, but it has always been the city's main square.

The cathedral with its tall towers rises on top of it, the architectural complex of which is a witness and symbol of what happened in the past centuries.

The namesake of the square is Saint Anne, to whom the cathedral is dedicated. Solemn processions took place around the square in the open air as early as 1539. They were always a stronghold of enjoyment and relaxation for the visitors, who watched the action in the shade of the palm trees, surrounded by the lively and harmonious trot of the horses.

The Santa Ana square is not only a witness of the past, but also symbolizes it in all its splendor and with its adjacent buildings. The square merged with the surrounding buildings into an inseparable unit.

For centuries, Santa Ana Square was the preferred place for the city's important celebrations and events such as the Easter processions or the founding celebrations of Las Palmas on June 24th. Over the centuries, the square has benefited from various renovation and beautification works.
