The Melanchthon Church is set back between the “Arche Noah” day-care center and the row of houses on Maxstrasse. It's easy to walk past them without noticing them. In the dark, however, when the five stained glass windows are illuminated from within, you can make out a church behind the walls.

Less than 50 meters from the Melanchthon Church is the tower of the former Luther Church, the largest evangelical church that existed in Ludwigshafen before the war. In the night of September 4th to 5th, 1943, it was largely reduced to rubble and ashes during an air raid. There were plans to rebuild it, but they never came to fruition. [like so many things in LU]
In February 1948, the church community in the center of Ludwigshafen received the message that "a larger emergency church can be assigned to a Palatinate community in the near future... and that only our community can be considered for this. On June 19, 1949, the Melanchthon Church was inaugurated . It is unclear what prompted the congregation to give their new church the name Melanchthonkirche. Perhaps she was inspired by the physical proximity to the large Lutheran Church and she saw her little sister in her church – just as Philipp Melanchthon was a kind of junior partner of Martin Luther.
