The Doelenpoort used to give access to the training grounds of two Leiden militias.
The militias, such as the Sint-Jorisgilde and the Sint-Sebastiaangilde, consisted of armed citizens who defended the city in emergencies and also maintained order in the city.
In 1798, the militias were disbanded. The buildings (shooting ranges and a club building) were demolished in 1821, but the original Doelenpoort from 1645 was preserved.

The Doelenpoort is a 17th-century gate. The gate is located at the northern beginning of the Sebastiaansdoelen, a street parallel to the Doelengracht, at the intersection with the Groenhazengracht. The gate gives access to the site where the building complex of the Doelen barracks was located from 1818 to 1980.
