Beautiful route from Essen Steele to Hattingen and possibly further.
Very well developed and enough space for pedestrians.
If you are interested, be sure to visit the Bochum Dahlhausen Railway Museum.
Is on the other side of the Ruhr and easy to reach by foot / bike.

The name LEINPFAD (synonymous towpath, Treppelweg in Austria or Reckweg in Switzerland) refers to a path directly along the banks of rivers or canals. Such paths were artificially created in order to be able to pull ships and their cargo upstream using people, draft animals or power machines. "Tow" is the actual activity of PULLING with the help of ropes. The tow drivers or tow horses were connected to the ships via this rope.

The historic towpath is almost completely intact on the Ruhr between the cities of Witten and Duisburg. From the end of the 18th century (approx. 1780) towboats were used on the Ruhr until the middle of the 19th century. The towpath forms a section of the Kaiser Route and the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route for around 75 km. The towpath below the Isenberg, the Lippe towboat village of Krudenburg and other parts are part of the Route of Industrial Heritage.
