"Strenuous ascent" is right. Good shoes are a must, and trekking poles would be very helpful - I didn't bring any and I swiftly regretted it. The way up is tough on the muscles, the way down is brutal on the joints. I could hear my knees creaking by the time I reached the bottom. It's definitely worth it to see the Shrecksee at the top, but this is not the kind of climb I'd recommend taking on without some serious footwear and an even more serious pair of thighs.

The climb to Schrecksee is not only steep, the paths are also made of scree and you have to be careful where you step. It is particularly slippery when it has rained. So be careful. On my last climb I saw people trying to get up there wearing short skirts and sneakers or even sandals. I still wonder how they managed to get back down :-)
