The Patio de los Arrayanes has been called in various ways over time. The current name (like that of Patio de los Mirtos) is due to the massifs of arrayanes (or myrtle) whose bright green color contrasts with the white marble floor of the patio, and which surround the central pond. It was also called Patio del Estanque or de la Alberca, precisely because of this pond, 34 meters by 7.10 meters, which divides the patio longitudinally and is supplied with water thanks to two marble basins located at each end. On both sides of the courtyard there are two naves with rooms and, on the smaller sides, there are porticos, supported by columns with cubic capitals, with seven semicircular arches adorned with openwork rhombuses and inscriptions in praise of God.

The Patio de los Arrayanes has changed its name many times over time, the current name Patio de los Mirtos is due to the massive of arrayanes or the myrtle shrubs whose bright green color contrasts with the white marble floor of the patio, and that surround the central pond that divides the patio lengthwise and is watered by two marble basins at each end. On either side of the courtyard there are two naves with rooms and on the smaller sides there are porticos, supported by columns with cubic capitals, with seven semicircular arches decorated with openwork rhombuses and inscriptions in honor of God. The central arch is larger than the other six, and has solid parapets.

The Alhambra's Myrtle Courtyard, a rectangle, is made of white marble with white columns to the right and left. In the center of the myrtle courtyard is a rectangular pool surrounded by a myrtle hedge, an evergreen plant. Here the white Comare storm is reflected. The myrtle is a symbol of fertility, chastity, purity and virginity and was sacred to the goddess Venus in Rome. Therefore, it has been used for bridal jewelry since ancient times to the present day. In the Middle East, the myrtle was already a symbol of peace in ancient times. The myrtle courtyard of the Alhambra was the center of all diplomatic and political activity.

The Myrtle Courtyard (Patio de los Arrayanes) has had different names over the years, the current one deriving from the myrtle bushes, whose bright green contrasts with the white marble floor, and which surround the pool of water in the center of the courtyard. It was once also called the Pond Courtyard or Water Basin Courtyard (Patio del Estanque/de la Alberca) because of the water basin (34 m by 7.10 m) that divides the courtyard lengthways and is fed with water from the marble basins at its ends.
