Beautiful remains of the former Wildenfels Castle, built between the years 1290 to 1300 and destroyed in 1552, are well worth seeing. The castle ruins were extensively renovated from 2013 to 2014, in addition to a seating area for a break, there is also an information board with the "technical data" about the former castle.

The Wildenfels castle ruins were a late medieval noble castle above the village of Wildenfels, a district of the municipality of Simmelsdorf in the Middle Franconian district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria, (Germany).

According to current knowledge, the castle

perhaps instead of a previous building, built between 1290 and 1300 by the Lords of Wildenstein, who had their eponymous ancestral seat near Dietfurt an der Altmühl. A Dietrich von Wildenstein zu Wildenfels named himself after the castle for the first time in 1323.

The originally free castle was entrusted to Emperor Charles IV in 1356 by the Wildenstein family from Wildenfels. The castle remained in the possession of the lords of Wildenstein zu Wildenfels until the end of the 15th century, when it was inherited by the lords of Leutersheim (also Lentersheim).
