The church of Skallerup was built in the middle of the 12th century in Romanesque style of granite stones. First the nave and choir, in late Gothic the sacristy on the north side and the porch on the south side were added, as well as the tower, which was built of stone blocks and bricks. A bell tower is located outside the church.
A peculiarity of the church is the use of a late Romanesque decorative element: so-called checkerboard. An interpretation of the checkerboard pattern is that of the walled chess game of the devil. According to a legend known in Denmark, the devil plays with God for the poor souls and loses the game and the board. To commemorate the happy outcome of the game, the chessboard has been walled up.

Skallerup Church. In the Romanesque style with a bell frame on the east wall of the choir. Original baptismal font, cut-out altar and pulpit from 1894, unusually wide choir vault and an altar niche from the Catholic period in the triumphal arch. Woven choir carpet made by Liv Stage in 1995. Brass baptismal font and jug made by Ebbe Hjorth in 1998.
