A wet alder forest covered the area for thousands of years. Only a map from 1781 shows the conversion to grassland, i. H. the farmers mowed the otherwise "unusable" areas to get bedding for their stables. At the beginning of the 20th century, part of the meadows were used as allotments and orchards. However, no agriculture was practiced in the Mardal meadow, and the soil was never altered by deep plowing or other agricultural measures. Until the 1960s, the grassland of the Mardalwiese was used as a hay meadow,
then as cattle and later as horse pasture. However, in the 1970s, sports fields were built in the economically unprofitable land, with houses on the outskirts
built. Today the Mardalwiese in Hanover is the last large area with typical scattered meadow plants and is unique in its kind! Since the 1980s, the western part has only been mowed extensively as a pure nature conservation area, the other areas are grazed by horses. This is how the Mardal meadow has developed into a botanical jewel.
