Maman (1999) is the largest sculpture in artist Louise Bourgeois' Spider series. She is over nine meters tall and carries a pouch containing 26 marble eggs. Maman is the French word for "mama".

Maman (9.27 × 8.92 × 10.24 m, 8165 kg) is a key work for understanding Bourgeois' art: the work pays homage to her mother, who worked in Paris as a tapestry restorer, and so, how the spiders, again and again renewed tissue. For bourgeois, the spider was a friend, protective, and helpful (in destroying vermin).

This bronze sculpture, a work by Louise Bourgeois (Paris, 1911 - New York, 2010), addresses the dual quality of motherhood, as the spider uses its silk to both create cocoons and capture its prey, while simultaneously reflecting the complexity of the People explores mind. At almost 9 meters tall, Maman is one of the most ambitious of a series of sculptures by Bourgeois themed around the spider, a motif that first appeared in several of the artist's drawings in the 1940s and held a central place in her work the 1990s. At the exit of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao we can walk between the narrow legs of "Mamá", the monumental spider by Louise Bourgeois. The tall sculpture represents her mother, who died when the sculptor was 21 years old, and as a result of that death, Bourgeois decided to leave mathematics and dedicate herself exclusively to art, which gave us great works.
For Bourgeois, this gigantic spider was the perfect representation of his mother. Despite its terrifying appearance, a spider is thoughtful, intelligent, patient, delicate, subtle and useful. Just like she saw her mother. The spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend.
And if we think about it, there is no better mother than a spider. She cares for and protects her young (there we see the eggs in her belly), she nourishes them. A spider is strong and fragile at the same time, both a tender mother and a fearsome predator.
A spider is also an artist: it weaves. Not only that... If you tear a spider's web. She reweaves it, restores it without altering itself. Bourgeois's mother was also a weaver. The family had a tapestry restoration business and once again, the sculptor was inspired by her family experiences, her childhood, and her life to create her extraordinary work, full of honesty and poetry.
It even makes us feel protected under the terrifying limbs of this monster.
