The building, erected between 1396 and 1400, was a stone symbol for the rule of its builder, Archbishop of Cologne Friedrich von Saar Werden. His cross coat of arms is still emblazoned above the entrance. A noble bailiff resided here as the deputy of the sovereign, who ensured law and order during peacetime and defended the Kempen region during war.
In 1634 the medieval fort with its loopholes and small hatches was transformed into a cozy castle through the installation of large windows.

The edging of the drawbridge can still be clearly seen, over which Hessian mercenaries stormed the castle after conquering the city of Kempen in 1642.

The Thomaeum grammar school was housed here from 1863 to 1925. The statue of Thomas von Kempen above the main portal still tells of this.

From 1929 to 1984 the castle served as the seat of the district administration and, after moving to Viersen, still contains the district and city archives.
