Kurt Knüppel belonged to one of Kahla's glider flying groups.
Above Zwabitz there was an ideal take-off point and a short runway.
In August 1937 Kurt Knüppel got into trouble with the plane "Leuchtenburg"
went into a tailspin and crashed. He died a short time later in a Jena clinic.
The stone was first in the Kahla cemetery and was later placed near the crash site.

It is assumed that the launch site was operated by some kind of catapult system up there.
There is no run-up, no foreign tugs and at the height of Martins Ruhe you can still see elevations that point to the above-mentioned catapult system.
