Altenberga Castle in today's format was built in the village in 1743 as a mansion as a successor to Altenberga Castle. But as early as 1459 a small castle was built on this site as a manor instead of the castle, which had been destroyed several times. It has obviously taken up spoilage of the castle or other predecessor buildings, because on the south gable there are several window cornices that are significantly older than the year of construction in 1743. One of them clearly shows the year 1663.
The Altenberga rulership owned successively:
the von Weissenbach family,
the barons of Riedesel
Reichshofrat Nikolaus Christoph Freiherr von Hünefeld (1663)
At this time Altendorf, Rodias, Schöps, Zwabitz (since 1670) also belong to Altenberga.
the von Schwarzenfels family (from 1695)
from Rothkirch.
According to Jürgen Gruhle, Arthur Brandt cultivated 377 hectares of land in Altenberga in 1923. [10] In 1945 the estate and mansion were expropriated without compensation. The former continued to be operated as an experimental agricultural farm. The manor house ("castle") is empty today (2012 [2021 still]).
