      As a child I had a hotel guide who listed well-known and less well-known hotels in the GDR. The Hotel Neptun in Warnemünde was classified as the only five-star hotel in the country and thus achieved a certain mysterious status for me. Of course, the little book did not state that the establishment was also at the forefront when it came to bugging, and this was the main reason that many foreign business and state guests were courted here. The bugs are (hopefully) all moved nowadays, but fortunately the hotel is still standing, and every time I visit, it makes me think back to the old hotel guide of my childhood. A special feature of the hotel is that all of the approximately 350 rooms have at least a lateral sea view.

              The Hotel "Neptun" in Warnemünde has a fascinating history. Originally planned as a dream destination on the Baltic Sea for western holidaymakers, it became the FDGB holiday destination in the GDR. The nineteen-storey hotel was built as a prestige project by the Swedish company SIAB and was supposed to prove world and western level in tourism. But after Walter Ulbricht was ousted, the "Neptun" also opened up to the working people. The young hotel manager Klaus Wentzel tried to maintain the high quality standard by offering special offers to FDGB vacationers. The chefs devised imaginative supply routes to offer upscale dining to Western vacationers. The hotel was monitored by the Stasi to prevent insubordinate contacts. After the end of the GDR, numerous informant files on hotel employees were discovered. The Hotel "Neptun" is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also a testament to the history of the GDR.
