The Auguste windmill in Gross Wittensee
One of the most beautiful and best-preserved windmills in our country is located in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein, embedded in the beautiful landscape of the Hüttener Berge nature park, directly on the Wittensee!
The cellar hollander built in 1874 - with a compass rose and jalousie wings - was extensively restored from 1998 to 2001 and is now windy and grindable again. It has both a wind power and an electric grinding gear, so that you can show the many interested visitors how to grind grain even without much wind. The function and handling of the sifter, oat crusher, elevator, cake crusher and wind sweeper are also explained as part of a mill tour!

builder and owner

1861/62 Peter Kuhr built the first mill in Kirchhorst and after a fire the second in 1874 in Groß Wittensee and leased it to Hinrich Meyer.

Hinrich Norden managed the mill from 1882 to 1901

From 1901 to 1913, Heinrich Greve ran the mill and installed a steam engine!

From 1913 to 1917, Hans and Jürgen Naeve managed the mill and built the residential building

From 1917 to 1943, Julius Lemke took over the milling business and renewed and modernized the wind drive

From 1943 to 1985 his son Wilhelm Lemke took over the family business. He still milled with wind power until 1958, then switched to electric drive and built the field stone storage facility

From 1985 to the present day, his son Hans Lemke has taken over the mill, which has been a listed building since 1972, from his father around you, with the help of his entire family and the mill association for the preservation of the Groß Wittensee windmill e restored and opened to the public.
