Hidden in a small grove near the river Iller, in the district of Rauns you will find a huge, stone-built Marian cave.

This structure, almost 4 meters high, was built between 1916 and 1918 by Johann Mayr, a farmer from Waltenhofen. As a taciturn, closed
you know him, who was with his sister at the time.
Together they farmed a nearby farm. He was mistrusted when, one day, he cartwheeled up the Iller from the horse-drawn cart. Quite alone, the farmer, who died in 1953, built the tufa cavern in honor of Our Lady. The sweeping roof is supported by curved railroad tracks.
At the beginning of the 1920s, he built a Way of the Cross to the Marian Grotto.

With the building, the farmer Johann Mayr thanked St. Mary, because he was forgotten on the list for the First World War.

Even today, the Mariengrot stands with many burning candles and fresh flower arrangements, with the help of an initiative still very well preserved. Some Mayan devotions are held there every year.

Whether on this striking, inviting hill was previously a place of worship, is questionable. Anyway, before Johann Mayr started to build, nothing was said there. Also the Kempten city archeology are no information known. At least the landscape above the Iller located spots but has a charm that nobody can escape.
