The origin of the reed sandstone is explained by geologists with a large river system, which flowed through Europe more than 200 million years ago and flowed to a primordial sea in today's Alpine region. Reed sandstone used to be mined in the quarry. Numerous buildings such as the Wendelsheim town hall, the Rottenburger Eisenbahnbrühe or the entrance area of the Wilhelma were built with stones from this quarry. The quarry was in operation until the end of the 1960s.
