Former lock chamber (length 28 m), today traffic lock, 2013 new building. The lock marks the transition from the unpaved upper reaches of the Alster to the canalized lower reaches.

Just a short time ago, the Fuhlsbüttler lock was renewed.

Until 2011, the Fuhlsbüttel lock, completed in 1914, was still a real lock, i.e. it still had a lock chamber. But it was getting on in years and in the end no longer stable. The conversion to a weir system that helps regulate the water level of the Upper Alster lasted until 2013. A new fish ladder with a so-called meander fish pass was installed, which creates different flow conditions in a confined space through offset small basins that can be used by fish for the ascent.
A hydropower plant with a nominal output of 110 kW had already been installed in 2000.

The Alster locks are the name given to the 10 dams that are used primarily to regulate the water levels of the Alster. They are spread over the entire length of the river. The two lower Alster locks, located in Hamburg's city center, are also used to lock ships.

The locks in the Upper Alster, above the Mellingburg lock, were always simple weirs, also called dam locks. Ships could sail into the valley after opening the lock gate on the Wasserberg. Today they only have the function of regulating the water level of the Alster. The Mellingburg, Poppenbüttel and Fuhlsbüttel locks were, like the two lower locks in Hamburg's city center, chamber locks with two gates. Since shipping traffic was stopped above Fuhlsbüttel, the second gates here and in Poppenbüttel were removed and the remaining ones were converted into weirs.[4] The Mellingburg lock became a double weir with the old lock basin in between.

The Rathausschleuse and Schaartorschleuse in the area where the Alster and the Elbe meet serve not only to regulate the water levels but also to provide a shipping connection for Alster ships, barges and pleasure boats between the Elbe and the Outer Alster.

The Alsterschleuse are an essential part of the river and lake landscape of the Alster and the Outer Alster and Inner Alster lakes, which are worth preserving and which characterize Hamburg and its surroundings.

At the recently renewed Alster lock you can watch how canoeists cross their boats.
The ten Alster sluices on the Alster regulate the water levels along the course of the river from the source of the Alster in Schleswig-Holstein to the mouth of the Alster and the Elbe in Hamburg. Except for two ship locks in downtown Hamburg, they are weirs.

Nice central point. A technical building which is beautifully packed and invites you to linger on the edge.

Coming from the west on the Alster, unfortunately you have to take a fairly high staircase to get to the lock.

Until 2011, the Fuhlsbüttel lock, which dates from 1914, was still a real lock, with a lock chamber. Since this was dilapidated, it was rebuilt to its current form with which the water level of the Oberalster can be regulated. In addition, a new fish ladder with a so-called meander fish pass was installed.

The Fuhlsbüttler Schleuse is a weir on the Alster in Hamburg. It was built in 1914 with a lock chamber and two weir fields and was used to regulate the water level of the Alster. After almost 100 years of operation, the lock was no longer stable and was completely redesigned in 2011 over a two-year construction period. It now consists of an automatically controllable weir system, which serves to protect against inland flooding on the Alster and to maintain the Alster's water level
