In the woods of the Vaalserberg, hidden in the green, there is a unique jewel. It is perhaps one of Vaals' best kept secrets. A Lourdes Grotto is located at the edge of the forest. The Lourdes Grotto was built in 1934 and inaugurated. In 1990, the cave was significantly expanded with the group Kruiswegpark and Calvary. The complex is located at an altitude of 289 meters above sea level and is therefore probably the highest sanctuary in the Netherlands. Today celebrations are held here regularly.
Next to the Lourdes grotto are the stations of the cross with 7 stations on the right and left of copper plates, which are mounted on white painted concrete slabs. The design is by the Vaals artist Frans Griesenbrock. The Calvary group was also made by him. Ceramic bodies of Jesus and the two murderers who were crucified with him hang on wooden crosses. Jesus hangs on a Y-shaped cross, the killers on a T-shaped cross.

Tucked away in the woods of the Vaalserberg you will find the Lourdes Grotto, built in 1934. At an altitude of about 290 m is probably the highest sanctuary in the Netherlands. When I visited them in December, the statues were packed nicely for the winter ... Photos without "winter coats" follow on occasion!
