The medieval castle Nanstein near Landstuhl in the West Palatinate (Rhineland-Palatinate) was built around 1160 by Emperor Barbarossa. It owes its current fame to a later owner, the rebellious knight Franz von Sickingen. The ruins of the hilltop castle lie on a 330 m above sea level foothill on the ascent to the plateau that begins south of Landstuhl. Remains of the southern outer bailey include the main gate, the lower ring wall with starwork and the town wall branching off from it, as well as part of the moat wall. The remains of the guardhouse and the castle chapel of the northern outer bailey are still standing. Also worth seeing are the kitchen with coat of arms stones, the large roundabout of the former battery tower and the small roundabout with the fountain bowl decorated with coats of arms. There are opportunities to get food and drink.

The medieval castle Nanstein high above the town Landstuhl in the Westpfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate) dates back to the 12th century. It owes its current reputation to a later owner, the rebellious knight Franz von Sickingen, who died in 1523 during the siege and bombardment of the castle. A restaurant with outdoor seating is also available. Definitely worth a visit with a visit. Entry 3.5 euros. For pensioners 2.5 euros.

Medieval castle from the 12th century. Once built as a security castle, the Hohenstaufen fortification system by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. Due to later inheritance, the castle was assigned to various owners in smaller units. Until Ritter Schweickhardt von Sickingen became co-owner of the castle and his son Franz could bring it into his property in 1518 by paying out the other co-owners. In 1523 the castle was destroyed by a united attack by the armies of three imperial princes after two days of shelling. Franz died a few days later from a serious wound. Franz's sons and grandsons rebuilt the ruin from 1543 and it was built. 1600 a magnificent Renaissance castle. In 1668, Elector Karl I. Ludwig finally conquered the building and had it blown up. After various makeshift structures, the French troops finally destroyed it in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689.

Beautiful castle ruins that are being prepared for tourism again. Entry €4 for adults. Parking directly and free of charge at the ruins. Beautiful circular hiking trails around it with great views. Small restaurant available.

Nanstein Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1253. In the 13th to 15th centuries it was an imperial castle, which was owned by a castle community with numerous commoners and several changes of ownership, especially in the 14th and 15th centuries. Always worth a visit.
