The birds here probably represent the damnation of souls, the long journey the girl has to go, the guilt that was burdened upon her at birth (see the search hike). The glass mountain stands on the one hand for invincibility, and on the other hand for clarity (transparent): the girl knows "crystal clear" what she has to do, and by chopping off a finger she is a sacrifice.
