Bison (European bison)
In the wild:
"The bison is the largest European land mammal. Bulls can weigh up to 1,000 kg, cows up to 600 kg. The bison's closest relative is the American bison, both descended from a common ancestor. After the land bridge between North America and Asia disappeared, the two forms diverged.
There were two subspecies of bison: the mountain or Caucasus bison (B. b. caucasus) and the lowland or Bialowieza bison (B. b. bonasus). However, with the steadily growing settlement of Europe, the bison population decreased more and more. In 1919 the last wild bison was killed in the Bialowieza Forest. Bison only survived in game reserves and zoos, in 1923 there were only 56 bison in captivity. Through breeding efforts and the establishment of the first international breeding program, the population recovered and in 1952 the first herd was released back into the wild in the Bialowieza National Park in Poland. Today there are again over 6,000 animals. Most of them live in protected areas.
Bisons are forest dwellers. Their favorite foods are the twigs, bark and buds of trees and shrubs. After a gestation period of 8.5 to 9 months, the bison calves are born in the months of May to August."
